Called Gëlle Fra - Golden Lady by the locals, is a monument situated in Constitution Square in Luxembourg City (Ville Haute quarter - Uwerstad).
Today, it is a memorial for the Luxembourgish soldiers and volunteers killed in the World War I, the World War II and the Korean War.
The monument was destroyed by the Nazis in WWII and it has become the symbol of the resistance of the Luxembourgish people against the Nazi occupation.
Atop of the 21 metre tall granite obelisk stands a gilded bronze statue of a lady holding a laurel wreath, placing it upon the head of the nation.
At the foot of the obelisk are two bronze figures representing two soldiers; one is laying down, having died in service of Luxembourg, the other one is sitting, mourning his dead compatriot.
The sculptor of the three figures was Nicolas Joseph "Claus" Cito (1882 - 1965), a Luxembourgian sculptor. The model for the Golden Lady is unknown.
The statue of the Gëlle Fra was exhibited at the entrance of the Luxembourg pavilion of the Shanghai Expo 2010 world exhibition.
